Title: Changing chain and sprockets

I need to do this now, had a search but couldn't really find a thread to help. How easy it is to do, and do i need any specialist tools?

I have a paddock stand so halfway there!

I'd really like to know about wheel removal and sprocket changing etc - do yo guys do you own or always go to a mechanic?

This video should help - you can cut your chain off too if it's easier (dremel etc) -  It's for an XR but no difference really - you don't really need a micrometer either - look on YouTube for more tutorials - process will vary depending on chain tool being used and rivet link type (this has the hollow pin link) - a picture is definitely more than a thousand words !

just an fyi, the rear sprocket nuts and the front sprocket nut are as tight as a nuns .......

But as said, the rest is pretty straight forward. you will need the chain riveting tool and a torque wrench.

For sprocket nuts/rotor screws, use a heat gun on each one of those for a good 2-3 minutes atleast and don't force the wrench too much otherwise you might bend the torx bits or strip the nuts.

I did have new tyres put on recently, and they had real trouble getting the real axle out (was bone dry), so hopefully that has aided me a little when it comes to my turn to do it.

On rhis bike I reckon the hardest bit of the whole job is re-installing the rear wheel. Same goes for tyre changes.
Its can be a real pain in the arse as a one man job if things dont go your way.

Definitely easy if you have all the tools. Grinder to get the old chain off and a Chain Riveting tool to Rivet the new Master link. we used 2 four pound hammers and a punch. one the back to hold the master link and another to hit the punch for riveting the master link.(backyard way) I would say get the Tool.
Also try loosen the rear sprocket and front sprocket nuts before you remove the wheel. you have more ways to lock the rotation of the nuts you trying to loosen up

Im intrigued that people are having issues with rear sprocket nuts. Mine were no different to any other nut and required nothing more than a breaker bar and socket when the wheel was off the bike. Sure, they were tight but nothing worth reporting here.

Im wondering if its because of the salt that some countries put on the road, causing corrosion and binding the nuts?

Sorry for the thread hijack but this may also be relevant to anyone else reading this thread.

I bought an oem chain and joining link and am just about to join the new chain together now.
However.
In the joining link bag there is :
1 side plate with the 2 pins already attached.
1 loose side plate.
4 O Rings
And 2 things which I can only describe as circlip type things (imagine a 10 year olds drawing of some boobs and you have an idea of the shape of them)
Where on earth do these go when joining the chain back up??
