Too many distractions IMO. Last thing I want to do is listen to music and answer bloody phone calls. Riding a motorcycle is the only time I’m away from all of that.

Then don't pair your phone to it.....Your choice.

It worries me that bikes are going in the same direction as cars with infotainment, it’s becoming more important than what the bikes actually like to ride.

I do use a TomTom and have comms in my helmet but that’s about it. IMO the Complex screens are a big distraction for some riders, especially novices.

I think BMW have done a good job of the display.  It is simple, clear and legible.  There is no excess information - just the basics Speed, RPM in large graphics.  And Fuel, Odo, Temp and Time in small around the edge.  You can, of course, access more in sub menus.  What I also like is that the navigation is just a simple instruction (ok the roundabout graphic needs sorting) that appears as you need it - you are not looking at a map.  Also useful is that on the main display (with just the basics) if your phone is paired and you have the app then the speed limit is shown next to your speed.  It doesn't do anything like flash if you are over the limit - it is just there.  I like that because with a lot of routes bouncing around between different limits over very short distances (or say you pull out of a side road onto a main road) I sometimes lose track of whether I'm in a 30, 40, 50 etc.  This is a helpful extra bit of information available at a glance.

    Agree with your concerns Hamburg.

One of my main reasons being on two wheels is get away from all the tecky stuff which seems to pervade every aspect of one's life 24/7. I don't want phone calls, music, sat nag directions etc. Us bikers have enough to worry about on the roads without these distractions.

Well off thread topic but…..So do you have a S1000R?  It is what is…..because it is a triumph of tech over physics.  Sounds like it would be the wrong bike for you?

You said you wanted to get away from all the tech while riding a bike….I was observing that the 2021 S1000r is all about tech and electronic configurability.  And Bluetooth navigation app, phone control, media controls , lean angle and brake force displays, IMU data trip recording, tracking etc etc etc.  If I wanted to get away from tech I get on my ‘76 GL1000 or my ‘92 GS or even my ‘04 Gsxr… But the tech on the ‘21 S1000R is so in your face it is impossible to ignore - riding it feels like a science experiment…..but a great science experiment which will pull your arms out their sockets.

Your explanations understood and noted. Perhaps we're of a different age group where some things are more important than others. Yes, I do own a 2020 model and bought it for it's lightness, low down grunt, safety features and the looks, but I couldn't give two hoots about lean angle and G force display on the new model..... all gimmicks in my humble opinion, but each to their own. Enjoy your new bike.  :028:

    Whoops, off topic....apologies.  :182: Blame Hamburg......he started it.   :008:

2nd thoughts might not do as socket possibly might be linked to wiz wheel and dash so maybe not just a power point.
