Front turn signals: Long stem/short stem
on: June 08, 2021, 03:29:39 PM
On my 2015 US Spec S1KR, I've got "long stem" non-LED front turn signals that have developed cracks and need to be replaced.  Searching Bike Bandits parts list it shows a picture of what appear to be "short stem" turn signals. I can't find "long stem" signals anywhere.  If I search MaxBMWs web site for this part it shows it as applying to the XR and not the R...so I'm a bit confused. If this "short stem" signal actually fits on the R I would actually prefer it.  Can anyone shed some insight if the short-stem version fits properly?

all the turn signal 'fittings' are the same, it iss just the length of the stalk that differs. So, yes you can use the 'short' stalk on the front of the R (and the rear for that matter).

Use the excuse to switch to LED.

I'm starting to think these "long stem" turn signals were a US regulatory thing and weren't installed in other markets, and that's why I can't find them in the parts list.  That may also explain why LEDs were not installed in the US market, as they have short-stems.  Anyone know?

You are absolutely correct on both accounts.

Correct, though I read somewhere that apparently the LEDs are not visible form a wide enough angle. Some of these rules/laws are somewhat laughable, following my wife on her GS with LED and a buddy on a GS with stock, the LED are way, way more visible that the stock indicators!

I cheaped-out and just installed the short-stem indicators on the front of my bike (rather than LEDs all-round).  I have to say they make the "long-stem" US/regulatory lights look pretty goofy by comparison.

Great to hear this worked out well for you. Mind sharing the part numbers? With my luck I'll order the wrong ones  :087:

I have a 2018 so not sure if that matters.

The part nos I have are 631 385 34352 and 631 385 34353.   I will say, though,  that I am not completely sure those are "correct"...my right light stem is about a half-inch longer that the left side.  It looks fine because it's a small difference and the headlight assembly is non-symmetrically anyway.  Also, one of the boxes had a part no crossed-out and replaced with one of the ones noted above.   So I'm not so sure about what I actually got.  You may want to just go on e-bay and match up the pictures for what you want.  Simon is correct in that may options will fit....you could even buy rear turn signals and put them in the front if you wanted.  BTW...as far as I can tell, the only difference between left and right sides is the location of the lens removal tab (mounted on the bike so they face downward, I'm guessing to act as a weep-hole in case of water intrusion).  Otherwise, left and right are interchangeable.
