I like your explanation of down shifting. Brought a good smile. On my regular "out for a ride" route there is a sharp hair pin. I tend to leave it in second as it is followed by a blind turn the other way so no need to get carried away, well almost no need. All fun.

Same here but the opposite way. It was mildly annoying with Castrol. Now with Motul 7100, it's way worse. :(

Some folks have experienced the hard-to-find neutral issue relates to the oil level being too high.

The condition probably worsens as the heat goes up.  Stay between the lines...

I changed from BMW Advantec Motul 7100 Castrol Power 1 and I liked Castrol to put to neutral.

I can't rememeber when I first noticed my five year old start having neutral problems but certainly been totally aware of it the last two or so. I just presumed it was wear and tear and the frequent track days I do and the 25000+ miles on the clock.
Sort of pleased to hear it's probably not any of those specific reasons if a lot of owners are having similar issues. I change my own oil and filters at least every few thousand miles or after long trips or multiple track days sessions and can't say I've noticed any change in selecting neutral with fresh oil.
I have noticed how light an action is required to select neutral by using my hand if the bike is running in gear on a paddock stand, though. Like when you pet the dog under his chin.

I had a similar challenge on my 2016.  Went back to synthetic and that fix it.
