    Evotech number plate led light

    Hi all,

My bike's MOT is due next week and iv just noticed that the evotech tail tidy's led light for the number plate isn't working. Iv checked  the fuse and all are fine and looks like I'll have to replace the led itself.
Can anyone please point me in the direction where can I find a replacement LED. I have searched eBay and amazon and couldn't find it.

    Thanks in advance.

Get in touch with Evotech and they’ll be able to supply a new one. Mine failed out of warranty due to water ingress and they were happy to discount the replacement.

I found out the light had gone at an MoT test. The tester said it wasn’t actually a reason to fail the test, so I got a pass anyway.

Thanks I'll try contacting evotech. That's surprising that you managed to get a pass add I have heard that is deemed as a major defect.

You’re quite right. Looking back, I had the problem with the number plate light just before the MoT rules changed in 2018. A non-working light would now be a major.

This is exactly why I'm concerned and not sure what will be the backup option other than spending another 80£  :003:

Have you checked the bulb in the OEM light cluster that you removed?

You may get lucky and find they are the same bulb?

Looks like Evotech sell the replacement light unit for £10. Still worth contacting them to see if they’ll knock a couple of quid off...

It's the same bulb as the daytime running lights in front.

This is one of the only topics I've found on the internet with this problem so I'm posting my investigation here:

    The light:

    Background:
I got my tail tidy second hand for an absolute steal. Not a bad price in general, but it had a wiring loom and indicators already attached so it was an easy simple swap.

About a year after fitting I noticed it was flickering, and this time around for my MOT it wasn't lighting up at all. Swapped back over to my stock one for the MOT and I pulled the light off to see if it was water ingress and if I could repair it (I repair electronics as a side hustle)

First challenge was getting into it. It's a sealed plastic unit with a wire coming out and a grommet for (poor) sealing from water. So busted out the 3D printer and made a puller to bust my way in:

This ended up working really well, a clean break from the back and looks easy to glue back together when I'm done:

Next step was getting it torn down and inspected for what's caused the failure:

The board looked absolutely spotless, no rust or water ingress, so tested each of the LEDs

As you can see from the pictures, 2 of the LEDs barely lit up, but voltage drop across some of them was infinite, so it's the LEDs themselves that have failed. They look physically fine:

I de-soldered them to test them off the board and got the same results.

I've ordered some new LEDs from China that will be here in a couple of weeks (£1 for 100) so I'll post back here with if this sorts the problem.

Got the new white LEDs soldered on:

Light is working a treat back on the bike
