New vs used
on: October 24, 2020, 06:05:59 PM
Hi everyone,

New member here. I test rode an s1k a year ago and really liked it but at the time had been off bikes for a few years so got an older speed triple to get back into riding. Im now itching to change so took an S1kr out this morning and it was just as good as i remembered. The demo hadn't had the first service yet so not full power but the handling and confidence i got from the bike made my mind up that it's the next bike for me.

Now to the difficult part. BMW are doing some good deals on the bike at the moment. 1k off list, 750 deposit contribution and 500 bonus on trade in. Unfortunately my 1 years no claims (i hadnt ridden for a few years before last year so lost previous no claims) means that the insurance really high. If i buy a used bike worth less then it drops to half the price.

So i've been looking around and found a 2017 model at a BMW dealer for what i think is a great price. Its done 7k miles and looks to be in great condition.

What are people thoughts on buying used vs new? The saving on buying the bike, insurance, not being as worried about track days and not having to worry about pcp mileage is steering me towards the used bike. Is there anything i'm missing? As the used bike is at a dealer it will come with a 2 year warranty.

It's a nice position to be in but would like to hear thoughts of others that may have been in the same situation?

Thanks in advance.

Tom

If it comes with a 2 year factory warranty what's not to like? Its basically the same as all current generation bikes.

I think "used" makes financial sense and I'm sure you won't regret it.  I have a 17' and love this damn bike.  I also sported an 08' Triple that I loved as well prior ,but this is much better. good luck! :028:

I bought an ex demo one with over 2 years warranty Included. Saved around £3k on list price. Apart from the kudos of having a brand new bike I would go for the second hand one with warranty and spend some of the savings on radiator guards, tail tidy and track days.

The new bike will come with a 3 year warranty.
Also, if you hold on for a couple(?) more weeks, you will be able to consider the NEW 2021 model, with more tech, and the new engine.
With the new bike coming along, the dealers will be wanting to shift all the previous bikes from stock - so the good deals.
A draw back with buying new is the first 600 miles seem to take forever to achieve :)
If your insurance is behaving like you say, then the high value is only for the initial year. So for the couple hundred pound more, you can loose this in the savings on the deal on the purchase. - But I never saw a significant difference in insurance price between the bike new, and the renewal the following year.

Kawasaki H2SX SE+ (2020)

Thanks everyone.

I went and rode the used one this morning. The dealer had just taken £1000 off the bike so it was a similar price to buying a private one. Added to that you get a 2 year bmw warranty and bmw assist. I couldnít resist so put a deposit down while they get a value for my speed triple.

Very excited!
