Am I being paranoid?
« on: June 14, 2019, 05:11:17 PM »
So I just picked my S1000R from Alton Motorrad. Its used, 2015 plate with 10k miles. Im not sure if Im being paranoid but the engine doesnt seem to like idling properly - even in neutral it keeps twitching between 1000-1250rpm. Its the same in rain or road mode (Im too scared to put it on dynamic never mind pro!). It doesnt SEEM to be doing the same thing above 3000rpm. My question is, is the twitch normal? Because it makes slow riding a real pain. I thought the S1000R was supposed to have very smooth throttle but at slow speeds its definitely jerky, and it actually happens a little bit even in higher gears at revs below 3000rpm..apologies in advance if I sound like a total fool but is this normal?

Just under 3k rpm it is uncomfortable (2800-3000).
When I'm going slow in traffic, I prefer 2nd over first gear.

I can easily do 20-30km/h in 2nd.

Can't remember offhand if mine also stutters in neutral. But I don't think so.

A bit of twitching at idle is normal, its a revvy engine with high lift cams.

For the low rpm snatch, check out your chain tension and cush drive rubbers to be sure theyre not contributing to any backlash.

:0461: Chain tension out of spec would be a contributing factor for sure. Affects the QS as well. I tend to keep it a little tighter than spec. I would also look at the chain and sprockets for signs of wear/stiff links/worn teeth etc. If all that checks out, the cush drive would be the next best bet.

Thanks for the advice guys! Just went for another ride in mixed conditions - its a dream in open road but at slow speeds - anything under 3000rpm - the bike is definitely very jerky. Is this something the dealer should be made to sort out?

Not trying to be rude, but I never find myself riding around below 3K rpm even in town unless its stop and go in which case I use the clutch to start and stop.

If it were me I'd ride it for a while and if this is the only odd thing then enjoy until winter when its too cold to ride.

That said it doesn't hurt to swing by the dealer and get their opinion as long as there is no charge and you can sense if they say something fishy that isn't a warranty item though I'm guessing its out of warranty.

There is a good article on buying a second hand S1000R in this months Ride magazine ( I think it was ride...), does mention the cause for the hunting off idle, cant quite remember the exact phrase that was used but it was to do with making the bike burning particularity lean at low RPM to keep the cat in good long term condition, this causes some hunting low down and occasional stalling ( I have experienced both with on my 2018 bike) so I wouldnt worry mate.

Honestly these replies are so reassuring, thank you to everyone who took the time to help me out! And yes I did try to crawl along in second gear but its actually worse in second than in first! The dealer has asked me to come in so they can try and figure out what the problem is..and Im in my honeymoon phase so any excuse to go on a nice long ride is goood!!
