Popping and farting with a decat pipe
« on: April 13, 2019, 11:50:09 AM »
I'm on my second S1000R and although the first one did the above too, i only ever had a standard set up on that one. The latest one has a decat pipe and Akra slip on.

It pops and farts all the time, in any revs, any gear, and especially when i change gear using the qs. I presume it is running lean, does it cause any long term engine damage by running the bike this way?

Does it do it in rain mode? If not, it's completely normal, BMW call it "thrust acoustics".

If you want to get rid of it then install some block off plates. I have some driven block off plates but have yet to install them, I like the pops and crackle of the exhaust.

I tested this yesterday on my R and XR, and the over-run pops definitely diminish when in Road mode compared to Dynamic mode.

Hi everyone, I have a2018 s1000r with Akpovrovic headers and in rain mode there are minimal pops however I am not a fan of the false popping caused by "thrust acoustics" as is turned off in rain mode I am wondering if it is possible to turn it off in the other modes

The popping is also caused by the PAIR valve. It's a secondary air injection system that pumps air into the exhaust to burn off excess fuel, it's an emissions part. When you removed the stock cat you now hear all deceleration pops, cracks, and bangs.

Sorry for the late reply!

I have had it bad recently to the point of the bike stopping, when around 3k in 3rd gear, always within 5 minutes of just starting up/leaving the house.

Ideally i'd let the bike warm up on the drive first but it's damn loud; i leave the house around 6.30 am and consider my neighbours!

I'm thinking about replacing the mid-pipe, remove cat and install straight pipe. Not planning to replace the header to keep the cost down. So If go with this route, is that mean I will hear more popping sound than before?

If you are going to remove the cat it will be much louder for sure
you will also have to tune and fit a fuel controller i would follow this post to keep you up to date
