NJ to Tail of the Dragon on an S1000R and RR
« on: April 03, 2019, 09:27:47 PM »
Hey Everyone,

A buddy and I are riding down to Tail of the Dragon from NJ May 4th. Both of us fitted the Ogio saddlebags and tailbags and are pretty happy with how they fit.

Not sure who follows me on here but I recently upgraded to a 2018 S1000RR, my buddy is on his 2016 S1000R. Should be interesting to say the least considering I was on an s1000R for 4 years and I'm not sure how 800 miles on an RR each way will treat me.

Anyone have any recommendations on places to see or things to do while on the way there or down there?

Much appreciated.

Cheers!

I ride in this area about 4 times a year.  To me, its the best riding in the country.  Tail of the Dragon is a great road, just try to ride it Sunday-Thursday.  The weekends suck.  NC 28 is BETTER that the Dragon.  From Franklin NC to 129 (start of the Dragon) is simply awesome.  It is also called the Moonshiners Hwy.  Cherohala Skyway is also awesome.  A great place to stay is the Fontana lodge.  Lot's of hotels in Franklin NC and Robbinsville NC.  Have fun.  -Dan

I'll be interested to hear how your trip goes, I'm heading down with a buddy at the end of May.  I'm about an hour outside of Philly so your trip will be similar to mine.

If you are coming down from the 'north' than you really need to take in the 'Back of the Dragon' hwy 16 from Tazewell,VA to Marion, VA. Carry on 16 south to pick up US 58 west, 91 south and aim for Mountain City, then pick up the 'Snake' US421 through Shady Valley.

Back of the Dragon and the Snake are both great roads!!

there is 143 and 21 over Roan Mountain.
80 goes down to Marion, NC
226a from Little Switzerland.

A little further south you can get 209 south from Hot Springs, NC. that will put you out at I-40(about an hour from the Dragon).

I just looked up the Tail of the Dragon on Google as I hadnt heard of it before. All the pictures showed great looking roads, Harleys crashing at every corner and lady pillions flashing their, erm, headlights. Whats not to like?  :008:

If you make it down be sure and ride the Cherahala Skyway. It has awesome views and also some nice sweeping curves.
If you start from the NC end you can turn left on 68 in Tellico Springs,TN and also left where it comes out on 294 in NC, then another left on 64 and make a big loop back to Robbinsville. 68 from Tellico Plains is a great ride.
I live about an hour away from the dragon and the skyway. There is some great riding around here.
Joe Brown hwy from Murphy, NC around to Hiawassee Dam access road then left to 294  and left to 64 which is also a good ride that takes about an hour and crosses a large dam. It takes about an hour starting in Murphy.
Ride safe and hope you guys have fun. I may see you on the road.
