Non DDC to DDC conversion? Has anyone done the impossible???
« on: November 22, 2018, 06:38:53 PM »
Just looking to see if anyone has done the impossible and gone from a stock (non ddc) to ddc s1000r conversion?
Iíve done my best to skim thru previous forums and Iíve seen plenty of ddc to ohlins conversions topics but none of non ddc to ddc upgrade...

I have a non ddc 2017 s1r and Iíve got the opportunity to grab the front end off a 2016 s1000r ddc with the electronic rear shock plus other bits to salvage off it.. I realise it wonít be a straight swap and could possibly be the most difficult idiotic thing to do incl the software change/upgrade but Iím looking to see if anyone has done it before or if itís even reasonably feasible, and if anyone can give me any information about it..

And before you start, yes I realise I shouldíve just got the ddc package initially when I bought the bike so save it, Im a fool and Im always doing things the hard way 🙃.. Iím just seeing whatís been done.. I just figured Iíll ask and worse comes to worst Iíll look at ohlins suspension upgrade

Regards

Send me your non-ddc bike and some cash and I'll give you my 2017 w/ DDC, lol.

DDC is garbage IMO, I wish I'd never bought it.

Iíd just go to a suspension guru and get your existing bike dialled in to suit you IMO.

You are looking at a minimum forks, shock, ECU, wiring, and then the time involved to do all the swap out. It would be more cost effective to do a trade for a DDC model, IMHO.

+1^

Also, there have been several comments in threads in this forum that DDC was designed for riders that weigh under 95kg (ideally). Something to consider

Thanks for the advice gentlemen, I have all the parts just a matter if feasible.. maybe Iíll go for the ohlins kits considering Iím 115kgs and will never see the ddc weight limit of 95kgs  :821:

Possible correction  :003:

I did some searching here on forum and couldn't find a specific call out of ideal rider weight being under 95kg. I did find a reference someone made to manual discussing:
"the BMW manual language makes it seem like the given target sag figures might only apply to an 85 kg rider and not to other weights." but nothing else.

You may want to inquire if anyone actually knows for sure first hand since I don't  :138:

I'll tell you that I'm 110kg with gear on and there's no way I will ever get the DDC suspension to work properly with my weight.  With preload maxed, I can't get close to the sag figures that BMW has in the manual.

At about 65-70 kilos kitted, I found the it to hard with rear preload at minimum. Front had some preload to work for me. If I loaded my bag on pillion seat with another 15 kilos or so the ride was much more compliant. So 85kgs seemed to me to be starting point at minimum rear preload.
Just more info for you.
