Safe to place motorcycle jack under the cat and headers?
« on: November 18, 2018, 10:14:13 PM »
Forum noob here.  Hello.

I plan to get the proper lift or paddock stands one of these days, but was wondering if I can use my trusty jack by just placing the pads under the cat and headers.  I just want to lube the chain.

No. the exhaust will not support your bike. Also, how are you going to balance it?

If you cannot get a stand now, have someone prop the bike on the side stand so the front is on the ground, and the rear is off the ground. This will allow you to spin the rear wheel.

But please, get a stand.

Ok, thanks.  Where would I place the jack pads to just lift the rear of the bike?

You wouldn't.

Get a paddock stand. Even just an inexpensive one on Craigslist would be better than you using the wrong tool for the job. Better than dropping your bike and damaging it or falling onto your self.

Can I ask why you feel it's necessary to lift the bike to lube the chain?  I realize it's the easiest way, but without a paddock stand, just roll the bike forward a couple times :P

I wouldn't risk it. You could damaged your bike....or worse , injure yourself. Get a stand. If you feel you REALLY cant wait to lube your chain, Zombie's solution is the way to go.

Ok, I guess I'll buy once and cry once.  I had Pit Bull stands for my R1200S, but they came with the bike.  So I don't know which ones to buy for the S1000R.  Is it just a matter of buying a front and rear stand and then the S1000R-specific attachments?

If you buy Pitbull (and I guess most other paddock stands) they are not really bike specific. On Pitbull's website they will tell you which stand you need by bike.
