Ticking/Clunking Noise
« on: October 30, 2018, 02:03:56 AM »
I purchased the bike with this noise and have had no luck with direction on where or what it is! It mostly sounds like it is on the right side of the bike (non-kick stand side)but is audible on both sides. I know that these bikes usually run louder mechanically cuz BMW  :008: but I haven't heard another R or RR with this much ticking. I did take out the cam chain tensioner which had some signs that it was messed with/replaced and it seems to be doing its job but I am no cam chain tensioner expert  :187: Any suggestions?? Here is a link to what is sounds like:

Thanks! I did see that forum. Nobody had any videos or sound clips of theirs so I couldn't compare either mine though  :155:

My '18 just has its Cam Shaft replaced, I don't have any audio of it idling.

Is that the clicking sound? Why only the cam shaft?

I did see that video of your bike somewhere and I dont believe that is the problem. It sounds more of a solid clunking/ticking. The sound is not as present when the revs increase but it's definitely still there. I ordered an APE manual cam chain tensioner. That's coming the 16th of November. I'll post a video after if it helps the sound.  :015:

So I installed the new manual cam chain tensioner and it didnt do a damn thing for the noise.  :151:

If your noise is exactly like mine with a ticking on the right side and more of a metallic pinging on the left side then I dont think you have a cam issue. I've heard bad cams before and it's a more subtle but revolutionary clicking. I'm not saying that you shouldnt check the cams because that is definitely wise at the 12k service tho. Mine is at 14k and had a valve clearance check and they didnt see anything out of the ordinary tho  :157: I say we should just accept that BMW makes some really noisy engines and enjoy these beasts  :008: :018:

To clarify for anybody reading this, the sound from my bike that I posed is primarily coming from the bottom of the engine, not the top. Its right where the clutch cover is on the left side and stator cover (i believe) on the right side. When I rev the engine up to say 3k, the clunking is not present but the ticking is still there and continues through all rpm's and is only really noticeable when on the throttle vs off. It hard to get a really clear clip of exactly how the clicking sound in a video because of how loud the exhaust is.  :021:
