seat height and pre-load
« on: June 24, 2018, 10:33:44 AM »
Sorry guys, I am a newbie here and already asking for help.

I am about to buy 2018 s1000r, but find the bike a tad high.

Would like to know i can get seat height lower by 1.5 inch, before i buy.

I can only think of a couple of ways of going about it.
First shave padding from the seat, and second adjust preload (I weight about 87kg with gear on).

Has anyone done any of the above and if so, how much height did it impact?

thank-you
frank

Hello Frank - try a search on the forum - a few have had a similar issue - here's one thread : https://www.s1000r.co.uk/index.php/topic,2075.msg24967.html#msg24967

Adjusting the pre-load might have some effect but that's really for setting up your handling - another solution is to drop the forks slightly - there are lowering link kits for the rear but this other post wasn't sure how it might affect the DDC : https://www.s1000r.co.uk/index.php?topic=1907.0

If you want a more rounded solution it might be worth contacting a suspension shop (they may have done this to R/RRs before).

Hi and welcome although you say it's a tad tall you don't say whether you've ridden one or not. The suspension has next to no movement when not running but rides at considerably varying heights depending on the selected suspension setting giving a lower ride height on the road. What height are you as at 87kg the seat height should be acceptable. I'm not the Jolly Green Giant but have no issues with the seat height. Try riding an Aprilia Tuono!! I wouldn't try a lowering kit as this will effect the handling.

thanks StandrewsX,
yes i have ridden a demo.
I am looking at getting around 35mm lower.
I think 20mm can come from trimming the seat and maybe a further 15mm from preload.
I know i need to consider the right sag.
I was hoping someone can provide further input in the above approach.

I have been riding for a while.  I do not have an issue with not being able to get both my feet flat on the ground, excepting when riding in the city.
I am not sure asking for my height will add any additional information that will result in a solution.  I know i need about an inch in height reduction.

I have a few friends who are experienced riders and are below 56 and they do ok with tall bikes. Lowering will compromise handling for sure if you are a spirited rider in twisties.
