BMW s1000r tank rattle
« on: May 20, 2018, 01:06:19 PM »
Hi everyone, new to the forum so this topic may have been covered although I've not seen it. 3 weeks into my ownership of the S1kS and loving the bike but since owning it  it had had a rattling buzzing sound coming from the tank area?? Stripped all of the plastics off removed the weight thingy in the tank and still buzzed thought it was the way the ECU mounts under the tank but still buzzing. After numerous test rides trying to hold onto anything that may potentially rattle I think
I've finally found what it is. It's the tank lock, no more buzz been out on it today and it's perfect.

Do you mean the filler cap or not?

Totally normal friend. MY RR did it, my R does it. The two main rattles are the steering lock pin (which gets loose and buzzes like a loose bolt on a washer), or a little balance shaft inside the fuel tank that moves around and makes a rattle. Either or both are noticeable at around 4000 rpm.

Ignore them all

Not the pin in the tank but the actual lock I've cut a piece of innertune to the size of the chrome lock cover and placed it on top then the spring action from the lock cover is enough to hold it in place no more buzz when you shut off ( like a lose washer sounds)

No need to ignore them as I've not got any rattles now. I think a permanent fix would be a racing petrol cap.

I to have this and it feels like something is moving in the filler cap when you rock the bike on its stand?

Is there my easy quick fix?

I had a buzzing sound at that area around 4k rpm.

It was the upper tank cover rattling against the tank.
The fairing part has a couple of "feet" bits which are supposed to fit up against the metal of the tank, but it doesn't.
At certain frequencies it would vibrate against the tank causing a VERY irritating noise.

Easy to test and fix:
If you hear the buzz just put some finger pressure on the tank cover - if the buzzing stops you know it is this issue.
I fixed mine by removing it and fitting some thin foam weatherstrip pieces where the "feet" touch the tank.
Added benefit of this is that it will not chafe through the paint over time either.
I got nothing.....

mine was definitely the lock as after stripping all of the plastics off a piece at a time and test riding it the buzz was still there. Took the weight out of the tank and tried it and still buzzing last but not least I rode it without a petrol cap and hey presto no buzz so now I have to work out how to stop this without it looking like a bodge
At the moment I'm using a piece of thin tin wedged between the locking mechanism and a piece of rubber on top of the lock.

Can someone post of what lock pin you are talking about?

Also why does the tank cap have a balance shaft?
