3 days in LA: recommendations for routes and bike hire
« on: May 05, 2018, 03:41:11 PM »
I'm flying into LA on Tuesday and have have a few days off work (fly out Sat).

Plan is to hire a bike and head out of town - looking for fun roads and avoiding the rat race.  I'm not really interested in the deserts - I've done that before.

Anyone got recommendations for bike hire and routes?

Hire: Eaglerider appears to be mainstream option.  Mainly harleys at around $180 per day.  Im not really a Harley person but suppose they can carry my duffel bag OK.

Routes: I was thinking about making a loop via San Diego and inland, but have no idea about whether I can find twisty roads and nice countryside?

You might want to check out https://www.twistedroad.com/ rent your motorcycle from a private party. There is a 2017 S1000RR renting out for $150 a day.

How many days are you looking to ride and miles you would like to do. If you go south there is plenty of roads inland San Diego we can point you to but a 1 day ride out of LA would limit what can be done. If you stay in LA, Malibu, highway 33, Angeles Crest Hwy several mountain rides to pick from.

Thank you!  What an amazing resource!

I will try to pick up a bike late Tuesday and return it on Saturday morning.  Will aim to cover a few hundred miles every day, so I suppose ballpark of 1000mi total is about right. Tips appreciated.

Dayum.
Someone is renting a 16 RR for only $85 a day. It's in San Diego, though.

You'd be hard pressed to find anything but twisty roads and nice countryside.

What days do you expect to be able to ride?  I might be able to offer some tour guidance.

A few hundred miles a day doesn't actually amount to all that much around here.  If you're based in LA, a loop involving San Diego and inland can easily hit 400 miles before you know it.

Hi Miles,

My flight arrives at LAX at 1pm Tues, and I will go straight to bike pickup, if renter is agreeable.  Then, will be riding the whole time until I drop bike back on Saturday before flying home at 10:30pm.  That's the plan anyway - let's see if I can get a bike.

Distance is no problem - I've hired bikes in the USA before and ridden from Texas to LAX, and also done a loop of California.  Also do plenty of miles in Australia.   Here's me, and a recent example:

Aside: if anyone visits Melbourne, I'd be happy to take them on our amazing roads.

I could play hooky for a good, long weekday ride.  Keep us updated on your bike acquisition progress.

Still looking but the 07 multistrada is interesting.  Has room for my stuff, RAM mount, $90 p/d and guy has helmet and I suspect can cater for me appearing during business hours.  I hope it doesnt still have those knobbly tyres.

Last time I was there was in a car, but Id head up the Pacific Coast Highway heading north - beautiful views and towns with stop offs - you can then zip back in a day down the freeway to LA - or Freeway first then saunter back south on the coast ?

Either way, enjoy !
