Coolant leak or overflow? 2017 s1000r 1300 miles.
« on: March 28, 2018, 08:01:34 PM »
Hi all.
Was wondering if anyone could please advise me. I was riding home this evening in fairly slow moving traffic. When I stopped I noticed some smoke/steam from the front right of the bike. When I looked down there was a steady trickle of coolant from underneath the right side. The temp was at 97 degrees. I was nearly home so proceeded on. The radiator is not damaged and the little clear tank is about half full. I'm due to ride the bike to work tomorrow morning but not sure if it'll be ok. Thanks in advance!...

There have been many threads on coolant 'loss/disappearance', you could be reading for a while!!! Though I will add that there have not been any reports on the newer models (that I know of!!).

Personally, having gone through some coolant loss issues(though have not had an issue for over a year), I would ride but keep an eye on it. Remember the little white plastic tank is an 'expansion' tank for hot coolant to go when it expands getting hot! I believe that (and I reiterate that this is my personal thoughts) a lot of the issues are due to there being air in the cooling system which expands more than liquid when hot thus pushing out liquid.

BUT, you need to do what you are comfortable with, and get it to the dealer sometime.

Check for any leaks under the water pump. There's a plastic seal right on the bottom of it, and some people have said theirs has leaked and had to be replaced under warranty.

If that's not it, and there's no obvious leaks from the hoses, then the only possible cause is some excess coolant blew out.

Thanks for the replies. It would seem coolant issues aren't unheard of with the s1000r. I'll have another look at it tomorrow. Hopefully it just came out of the overflow.

My 1300 mile 2017 bike dumped a lot of coolant out onto my garage floor a few weeks back. That took my coolant level to well below minimum, there were no sign of any leaks etc so I presumed it had come from the overflow pipe on the expansion tank. I called BMW assist and they recovered it to my nearest dealer who diagnosed a leak in the radiator and replaced it under warranty. There were no signs of external damage from stones etc. It's been fine since but I do keep a close eye on the coolant level now.

I'd be running it past your dealer if I were you.

I discovered this on mine - goes in on Tuesday, most likely for a new pump.

Keep us posted as to what they do.  Usually, they'll try to pass of a wee bit of a dribble as "normal".

I have run mine at the minimum level on the expansion tank and have had no issues since (2015).

Went for a blat today, and the coolant splattered all over the cat, the servo, and up the pipe to the muffler. I even saw a couple of specs on the edge of the rear tyre, where I occasionally like to ride! Pretty sure the pump will get replaced, but will post any issues as they arise.
