ABS Pro - Cornering ABS - 2014 S1000R
« on: February 11, 2018, 10:45:36 PM »
Hi All,

Been lurking a bit on this forum from Canada.  I'm doing research into whether or not anyone has added the software upgrade for ABS Pro / Cornering ABS to their older s1000R and what their experience has been (mines a 2014).  Just had my bike in to have some plastic and carbon replaced (some guy in a Subaru Forester decided to knock it over when it was parked), and was informed when I was there that because the bike is fully loaded, that I just need a simple software update installed because the bike already has everything else required for ABS Pro.

The local BMW shop here told me $800 Canadian ($635 USD).  At this price, it seems well worth doing, much cheaper than buying a new S1000R.  Has anyone else done it?  From what I have read on these forums, consensus was it couldn't be done.  I have been told differently by the dealer.

I had ABS Pro added to my '15 for a bit under $500 US.  I haven't tested it, yet......

Haven't tested it yet, as in haven't been out on the bike with it yet?  Or haven't grabbed a handful of brakes in a corner... ;)

I also just had ABS-Pro added to my '14 S1kR. I have no idea if it is there or not as there is no indication that ABS-Pro is installed, and I sure as heel am not going to go and purposefully test it out!!!!  :112: :112: :112:

Uh, it would be the latter option.

Haha!  Yeah I don't think after all these years of riding I could test it either.

So there is no indication that it has installed at all?  I guess just the firmware version on the bike?  Anyone know if there is any difference between the retrofit version that is installed on a 2014 vs the newer bikes like the 2017 that comes stock with it?  I originally heard that a lean angle sensor had to be installed, but my dealer said it was just software.

AFAIK, if you have the premium/sport package (DTC, riding modes pro, etc) then you have all the sensors already.

Why is it so expensive if the sensors are there and it's just a software update?
Safety is paramount with BMW if you are willing to pay throuugh the nose for it.

Fun new fact - It not only costs $635 USD to install her in Canada, but costs $635 USD to remove if you decide to roll it out, and then would cost $635 USD to install it again.    So you aren't buying the software upgrade, you are buying one dealer action with the software (i.e. a one time installation code).  Guessing that nobody would roll it back out, but thought it was interesting that you pay for a single software transaction, not the actual software, so its not something you actually own like carbon bits, or other bike add-ons.
