Clutch Cable Recommendation?
on: October 21, 2017, 11:39:08 PM
2015 with 12,000 miles.  Clutch cable beginning to fray at lever end.  Still under warranty but not covered by warranty.  Any recommendations on brand to use that will last longer?

What did you end up using/buying for your clutch cable ?

I am facing the same problem (after 22,000km). Actually, mine almost snapped. Barely made it home.
Ask a few dealers for replacement cable... it is 150.00 $Canadian + taxes... that will convert into roughly 140$US just for the part.

For my bike (2014), the part number is: 32-73-8-535-499
https://shop.bmw-motorrad.ca/p/BMW__/Clutch-cable/61135005/32738535499.html

For s1000r 2017 and newer, the part number for the clutch cable is now 32-73-8-355-099
https://shop.bmw-motorrad.ca/p/BMW__/Clutch-cable/91091809/32738355099.html

and the price is "only" 115$Canadian (roughly 107$us with taxes)

What could be soooo different between both cables ?

I really feel I am getting screwed by BMW on this. Also, I could buy this second cable (32-73-8-355-099) from Venhill (venhillusa.com) for 40$us, including shipping ! Are they any good ? Will this cable fit my 2014 bike
Unfortunately, no aftermarket seem to make the (specific ?!?) cable for 2014-2016 bikes...

Any ideas ? Help...

I bought a spare clutch cable 5 years ago because of all the stories going round the forum. My original is still going strong, so no issues there. Pardon me from appearing clueless, but a clutch cable is a clutch cable(as long as the 'knob' is the same size and the length is correct), or am I missing something. If it helps here are measurements (part# end 499)

length tip to tip - 126cm
Length of sheath - 107.5cm
length of adjuster thread - 4.6cm

Just checked, I paid $54(with tax) back in July 2016 from the BMW dealer for the spare

I don't think you are clueless at all..... I AM ! In 40 years riding, can you believe I never replaced a clutch cable ? I think it's the only thing I did not replaced on a bike. So yes, I was thinking the same as you... total size/sheat/thread/... then I saw the (big) price difference between pre and post 2017 for the cable... and I started wandering... is there more to it ????

I'm going from memory here, but IIRC, there was a tolerance and/or machining issue with some of the OEM clutch levers that caused chaffing.  The cable was not at fault...if the lever had a chaffing issue, the cable wouldn't last long...otherwise it was fine. It is easy to see if there is a problem with your lever, so you may want to take a closer look.

I also saw that thread about the lever eating the cable. I have HP levers and they do not touch the cable. My stock levers on a 2015 and my current 2017 bike did not touch either. But several folks had a problem.

I have had Pazzo levers on my 14 for most of the 33k miles, still on the original cable with no signs of wear, but I really only use the clutch when coming close to a stop.
