RAM Handlebar mount - bar diameter?
« on: January 01, 2017, 07:33:58 PM »
New Years greetings!
I am looking to fit a mount to enable the mounting of an iphone 6 plus via the bar mount pictured below, can anyone confirm the outer diameters of the bar please?

Many thanks

Depends where you mount it. The bars are fatter by the triple tree. That's where mine is. I got the 1-1/4" ram mount but, it's a glorified U-bolt, not what you're showing.

So, to answer your question, I just measured my bar, it's 1-1/4" right by the triple tree and tapers down to 1" near the controls.

I bought a RAM Mount Tough-Claw (small I think) as base for iPhone holder, with Claw grabbing the handlebar just outside of left-side handlers clamp. YMMV but the combination of Claw + short arm + iPhone mount provided the perfect dynamics, magically tuned to amplify the bike's vibration into sufficient violence... and my iPhone died after about 18 hours riding over 2 days. Seriously.

Purchased a good vibration measurement app for this coming season and will investigate damping techniques. I use my phone as GPS and cannot afford another random iPhone replacement.

@Stuart, I believe the mount you are showing is for bicycles because it looks like all plastic.
The sturdy and trustworthy mounts are all metal, also looks like it's not the 1 inch ball but smaller version.
Take a good look before you decide!

As an alternative suggestion, the RAM-B-367 mount (replaces one of the four handle bar clamp bolts) works well for me and my Rider 400 sat nav is similar in size to your iPhone 6 Plus.  Using the RAM-B-201-A short arm, I can position my sat nav so that my view of both the display screen and the instrument panel is unobstructed, even when I have my tank bag fitted.  Mounting off the handle bar clamp also offers my sat nav some protection from the elements, stones etc because it's partly tucked behind the instrument panel / windscreen as well.  No vibration issues either.  Might be worth a look.

I am using the new RAM tough claw universal mount, it is awesome. No hardware or marring of the bar surface due to rubber clamping jaws.

Fits varying thickness of bar sizes

I agree with SimonS1KR, replaces one of the clamp bolts, does not mark the handlebars, and with my Zumo660 mounted the clocks and warming lights are still clearly visible.  :028: :028:

Hello everyone, thank you for your help....

I have a Garmin 590 mounted via the BMW navigator mount that goes over the 4 handlebar securing bolts, can I assume that rules out mounting my phone via one of the bolts?

The claw could be an option? some discreet rubber or cycle inner tube may protect the bars?

Can I ask what cases you are using ? and if they are waterproof or water resistant?

Thanks again guys

I have exactly this except I have the shorter "arm" that links the handle bar mount to the "X" holder...

I have the ball that replaces one of the clamp mounts, then a long extension mount, and an iPhone dock.
Works like a charm.
Also got the tough clamp, use that for my go-pro.

I'll get som pictures taken and post a litte later.
