    Best Trickle Charger for S1000R

There are a few threads that mention this but I'm looking for definitive advice on the best trickle charger for the BM.

I have an Oxford Oximiser 900 (yes I know !) but to be fair it has handled my old Honda batteries really well.

Rather than the CanBus system / plug, I'd rather have the direct to battery permanent connections.

But swapping over the connectors to the Bm and plugging in the Oximiser the charger doesn't seem to be sending anything over - just reading 0 volts - bike is fine and battery appears ok in normal operation.

This may just be a quirk of the Oxford (will check the inline fuse on the pigtails connectors etc) - so if I can't get that to function what are my trickle charger options and what is recommended ? CTEK seem like a good option, but which model ? Any other useful tips ! ?

Any advice would be great ! Cheers ....

I use the Optimate connected direct to battery. Used Optimate for years with not faults or complaints and more importantly, no battery issues. Quick connection lead fed through to pillion seat area.

I use the CTEK XS 0.8 which is cheap and works great. Box includes two cables with a quick connector: one that you can hook up directly to the battery and an additional cable with clamps. I installed the cable that hooks to the battery on the S1KR and have the quick connect plug routed under the seat and tucked behind the side cover (the grey plastic one). The quick connector plug has a rubber cap that is water proof.

I use the other cable with the clamps to occasionally recondition my car battery. Even though the charger is only 0.8 amps it manages charging the car battery too (but slowly...).

    Very much recommended.

Optimates are great.  I've been using the same one for 15 years or more, only lost one battery in all that time.  Fly lead connected direct to the battery so that the charging connector is accessible under the pillion seat.  It even survived me riding off whilst still connected (idiot moment), just had to put a new mains plug on the power cable and it worked again.  I use a second Optimate of similar vintage to maintain the battery in a quad bike and to trickle charge leisure batteries for electric fencing, all without issue.

I also have a bigger CTEK charger for maintaining the batteries in a 7.5T truck and it works flawlessly as well.  I would happily buy a more motorbike-sized CTEK unit and would probably pick between CTEK and Optimate solely on price if I was in the market.

I've been using $10 solar maintainers for over a decade and have not had a failed battery the entire time. I have 3 mounted to the exterior wall of my shop facing west (direction is not important as they will more then recover what is lost in a day) and the wires run to plugs on each bike. Even do well in the rain or clouds/fog.

I have  C-tek XS 5.0 which is a car charger that has a motorbike option and it works great. Its fool proof. Just plug it in and turn it on.

Apologies for the bump, but does anyone know what the best trickle charger would be for the Gen 3 lithium battery? I notice they are all 12V, but the system voltage is 14V, does this matter?

I have used a SAITO charger for about 10 years that was highly recommended back then & I used it on my Yamaha R1 until I got my 1st S1000R in 2016. It has performed flawlessly since then & I have just started using it for the last 10 days on my new 71 plate M Sport with the lithium battery.
No issues so far, but I'm no electronic expert.... so if anyone has experience I welcome any comments?!

Like most others I had the connector cable permanently wired to the battery & router under the rear seat. It is the same configuration on my new bike which already came with the Optimate connector fitted... the Saito & Optimate are the same connector type so are compatible.
The charger can be switched from 12v to 6v & has a very comprehensive display of lights to inform of the battery condition/status.
They have changed shape/size from mine but are still available online.

Hi have you had any issues using the charger on the lithium battery?I was under the impression you couldn’t use a normal lead acid battery charger on a lithium battery. I have just taken delivery of a 2021 S1000R M Sport and this has the lithium battery and I am undecided wether to get a new charger or not

+1 for CTEK MX5.0 , use the plug supplied ( , direct connection to battery routed up to pillion for easy charging when needed
