2015 S1000RR exhaust mount (another option)
« on: March 09, 2016, 09:21:03 PM »
Hi all,
Other day was reading about the improvements on the exhaust system of the latest RR. Noticed that the cat box as we have in ours is not there anymore. Being same bike the question if the full standard system of this new RR would fit our R came to mind.

Thinking about it can have the headers and for those of us who need to watch for the legality of the system can keep the cat and exhaust valve but then mount a different slip on. Also in the direction of people letting their system or selling it cheaper.
All with the idea of getting rid of that box under ours.

So finally one from the German forum did this mod. And clearly it is ALL compatible.

Someone beat me to it then, I knew this would work but haven't been able to source a '15 RR system locally for a price worth spending on an experiment. To me this is the ideal compromise; keep the exhaust valve for low RPM response, retain the cat for street legality, and then put a smaller muffler on the end to replace the stock one for weight reduction and a better sound.

Guess I'll keep looking for a cheap used system and try it out myself, I'll post results when I get around to it.

I've just bought a system off a 15rr myself, the only thing worrying me is the diameter of the headers as they enter the exhaust ports on the head, certainly on my first SK1r they were smaller than the rr. I'll let you know soon but for 125 I thought it was worth a punt.
I agree with all you say Archie, my Akrapovic headers were way too loud and I didn't like the loss of low down and mid range.

Hasn't been Fredrico from Rome / Italy been running the rr 15' exhaust for a while now?

Just checked his posts, he said he's been running a full Akro off  a 15rr, but that still suggests it may fit straight on.... we'll see.

Good call..I still think some milling of the headers will be in order to make a proper fit. I'm not sure though..he has the same style modded rearsets I do so I would not be surprised if his dealership had to make them fit.  Ask him

I may be wrong, but I think I have read somewhere that the headers from the 15/16 RR are the same size tube as our bikes. The pre15 RR had slightly larger diameter tubes.

I asked the German guy and he tells me that it fits well in the s1kr.

Two things though.
He had to work on the exhaust valve cables as the mounting is slightly different so means routing the cables in another manner. He said not a big work to do this.

Second is that the pipe mount to the bike does not have the same exact position of the hole to the bolt, so at the end he drilled another hole on the mounting to attach it. Ok this last would be solved by another slip on instead.
