Touring - Tail Pack, Roll top Bags, what works ?
on: May 22, 2022, 09:48:41 PM
Considering moving from my GSA to the lighter S1000R.
So obv. the removal van sized panniers are not coming with me, but the S1000 doesn't look very luggage friendly.
What's recommended, how secure is it, how easy is this bike to live with for 10 days on the road ?

Have a look around, plenty of people have added boxes, tank bgs and panniers to their S1000Rs.

I have a top box(fitted by a ventura rack this time but was mounted directly to the pillion seat previous as some have it now).

that and a 15L Givi bag is enough for a 10 day jaunt for me.

As for why not an XR1000, ive tried that option twice test rides, new and old model, they  seem on paper the next logical step but the extra weight , length /width and suspension travel just makes them unweildy and the handling much more remote when pushing on.

Not for me yet anyway...

Simple- that was my bike before the GSA .
The GSA is great mile muncher for whatever type of road you choose. BUT it’s barking heavy, like a Harley on stilts.

This is the setup I used for a month in Eastern Canada, which included camping and some very remote stretches of road.

To your question, I use SW Moto soft paniers on my R and my RR and am quite happy. They aren't the biggest though are expandable and very secure in my experience. They are also easy to remove w/o leaving unpleasant scaffolding etc. Link: https://sw-motech.us/bike/BMW/S1000R/2021/2R99+-K63-/products/luggage/saddlebags/BLAZE/4052572200070.htm

These combined with any number of tail bags/back boxes and tank bags should do you well.

Attached below is a pic of my bike with the SW bags (actually BMW branded but same).

P.S. the bags on my RR tend to slide forward when riding (my RR is a 2021 so similar/same rear as a current S1000R). Not a problem and I don't feel them against me but they do slide forward some which did not happen on my old R that had a different rear seat/subframe design.

Just finished 4 day tour with SW-Motech RR bags on my R and they worked great.

I put a landing pad where the pillion goes.  :)

+ 1 for the ventura and top box.
I reversed the top bod plate,so the top box sits
above the pillion seat and doesn't hang out.
When not in use,I simply attach the grab rail to the ventura
