Starting issues
on: December 23, 2021, 05:35:55 PM

My commute is an hour and I leave the bike sitting at work for about 8 hrs and then it starts fine and I go home. Guessing it gets a good charge during that hour. My Biketrac app shows 13.1v after that hour.

However starting it in the morning and it's a different story. Biketrac shows between 12.9v and 12.7v usually, and it tries to fire but won't. Can hear the full pump priming.

After trying two or three times I give up as realise it's futile. I then put the battery on my Absaar battery charger (some old heavy duty German thing) and after ten minutes I get enough charge to start it up.

Is 12.9v after the bike sitting overnight normal, and enough to start it?

Sounds like an old, tired battery. Check connections too. Hooking it up to a trickle charge device overnight wouldn't hurt.

Get a multimeter and check the voltage across the battery terminals when you're trying to start it, if it drops much below 12 when you're cranking, you need a new battery.

They’re usually pretty reliable bikes, sounds like a duff battery.

I do put it on an Optimate overnight and this morning still it wouldn't start. Any idea what battery they shipped with, as curious if mine is the original? The bike is on a 2015 plate.

Very possibly the original. Thats why its got no cranking juice left. Swap in a new one. Easy enough to find at online retailers. You could opt for a lithium unit (lighter) if thats your thing but you would need a trickle charger that is compatible.

Same problem with factory battery after 2 years.

Tried this battery and engine turnover is pretty fast even on really cold mornings.

Just closing this off.

Ordered a new Yuasa and it roared to life, almost as if it was getting too much of a charge - took me by surprise. It hasn't not fired up first time since the new battery, so all is good.

Thanks for the help.  :028:

same happened to me 2 days ago. Even though it was on trickle charge overnight. Battery was dead (original one I think) . Got the yuasa one from Halfords for £50
