Because the vast majority had no problems.
Why fix what ainít broke?

Once problems crop up, itís easy enough for BMW to track back the batch numbers and figure out which bikes are affected and deal with them (as the bike in the original post illustrates).

ok, but if my warranty expires first and then it happens? Does BMW then change my engine for free?

I would guess if there is surface hardness problem with either the cams or followers, it will show up way prior to the end of the warranty period.  In the event the bike is hardly ridden and the warranty expires and the issue arises, I would hope BWM would fix it anyway.  It would be obvious on a teardown what the problem is.

I've never heard of it happening on a higher-mileage bike, but I suppose it could happen to a bike that wasn't ridden much before the clock on the warranty ran out.
I suspect in that case it becomes a question of whether the local dealer will go to bat for you or not.

Again, although this is a known issue, it isn't a common one. Yes, it could happen to you, but the odds are very high it won't.

Lots of cam problems over the past 12 years, across most models. I just read today that an extended warranty from BMW factory, will be available in the USA if wanted. It goes for a total of 7 years and not limited to 36K miles either. Very good piece of mind.

You are right about BMW offering an extended factory warranty. I purchased an extra 2 years of the factory warranty (5 total) when I purchased my new RR. When the dealer mentioned it was available I grabbed it without thinking really since I've always wanted one.
