In-situ Battery charging
on: August 27, 2021, 02:47:49 PM
Hi,
Can anyone advice me which is the best way of in-situ battery charging?

I had thought of installing a DIN socket to one of the the standard bmw oa connection with an Optimate 4 CAN-bus but the dealer said ‘ never charge using a DIN socket as it switches on instruments/ ignition, activates it somehow so when the battery has finished charging the ignition or something is still on and drains the battery ….. or something along those lines’.
Alternatively I could connect the Optimate directly to the battery but my understanding is that the charger reacts differently this way.

I’d greatly appreciate you help.

Joe

Connect straight to battery. Charger does not act differently.

Thanks guys,
my impression from Optimate was that the charger behaved differently when it was connected to a DIN can-bus connector rather than directly to the battery?

Unlike some other BMW bikes the S1000R doesn’t have a din aux socket, so most of us just use a regular charger, using a pig tail lead directly connected to the battery.

If you have an Optimate for use with BMW canbus, just switch it over to the normal setting and use a direct connection to the battery
